How can I get one?

So you are interested in a Farr 3.7? So interested you are keen enough to even contemplate getting hold of one?

But you'd like to sail one first? No problem I'm happy to make my boat available for test sails. Contact me through this blog.

At the moment the only way to get a Farr 3.7 is to have one built, build one yourself or import one, like I have just done.

Importing isn't as expensive as you think. Admittedly it does increase the cost of your purchase, but the British Pound is quite strong against the New Zealand Dollar which helps a fair bit. Not least in purchasing the boat in the first place. But a rough cost for shipping is between £1300 - £2000.

Then of course there is the self build option. Plans are available from the New Zealand class association. And with the kind permission of Peter Kovesi a set of nested auto cad files are available to enable the laser cutting of all the plywood parts. The cost of which would be around £110. Well worth it.

And then there is the boat builder option.

In the process of of investigating the viability of importing or building a 3.7 I asked several boat builders to price the job. So I have reasonably accurate figures on this. But the basic cost would be around £4000 for the hull. The rig is best imported from C-Tec in New Zealand as are the sails. The cost of the mainsail from Fyfes is around £550 with the rig coming in at around £900. With foils from C-Tec again being around £600. Fittings would most likely add another £500. So you are looking at about £7000 for a boat when you include a trolly and cover. Not an unreasonable sum these days for a new bespoke boat.

I have also been sent some prices for a kit price from Howdens in New Zealand for those wanting not to have to do all the laborious cutting out of frames etc... (see below)

The prices are in NZD and are as follows;

Frames constructed ready to stand up on the building jig with all doublers attached; $1135.67 (excluding GST which would not be applicable outside of NZ)
Because of the length of the girder, and transport logistics it would be best to purchase that in cut out form and assemble it on site. that would be $320.00 (excluding GST)
My suggestion would be to purchase the Gaboon ply (4 sheets of 4mm and 1 sheet 3mm for the deck) and a suitable lightweight timber for the gunwale, chines, stringers etc plus glues, and fastenings in the UK to make it cost efficient for you. Price does not include Freight to the UK as depending on the sizes and weight of the package being sent an accurate price can not be determined.
